A 23-year-old Maryville man has been arrested in connection with a burglary that took place around 5 o'clock Sunday morning at a residence just outside of Maryville.

According to Nodaway County Sheriff, Randy Strong, Trevin J. Wilmes was charged following a break in of an elderly couple's home located in the 2700 block of Glacier Road in rural Maryville.

"The suspect was armed with a knife that he brandished while threatening the two victims.  The suspect was also carrying an axe.  He confined the two victims in their bedroom and periodically over the next two hours would go in and check on them and make sure they were still there."

Strong says cash, a television, a silver tea set and credit cards were taken from the residence.  The suspect also attempted to set fire to newspapers in the kitchen that did not spread to the rest of the house. A coat not belonging to the residents was found at the scene. The couple's pick up was stolen as well as their cell phones which Strong says law enforcement officers were able to locate by GPS.

"It appears that he used the victims' phone and that gave us a person of interest that fit the physical description of the suspect given by the victims.  So throughout the day, working through the noon hour, we continued to build on this case working backwards looking at this individual.  Throughout the day, evidence continued to mount against this individual.  We found out that he was possibly staying in St. Joseph, Missouri, with a girlfriend and another individual down in an apartment.  We also found a witness that positively identified the coat as belonging to our person of interest."

Strong says Wilmes was arrested in St. Joseph and has been charged in Nodaway County with Class B Felony First Degree Burglary, Felony Armed Criminal Action, Class A Felony Kidnapping, Stealing and Tampering with a Motor Vehicle.
